If you live in a house, two things you MUST have is a floor and a roof. This really goes without saying. There are hundreds of types of floors like stained concrete, Saltillo tile, vinyl tile, laminate, real wood, etc.; and inside one house there may be several different types of floors. Whatever kinds of flooring you may have, the floor is an integral part of your décor not to mention your basic everyday living needs. Now that we’re standing, let’s look up. That roof hasn’t really been looked at in a long time has it? Do we even know what’s up there?

Look before you leak

When it comes time to clean the gutters or get the neighbors’ ball, take a few minutes and walk around up there. Get a good look at your roof. Check for uneven spots or obvious damage. Remove any debris you might find up there such as piles of wet leaves or tree branches. If left unattended, organic debris can rot through even the toughest wooden roofs. Of course, metal roofs would be exempt from that, but debris on top of a metal roof can certainly deteriorate the paint and in turn, your roof will rust; leaving it prey to the elements. If your roof starts leaking but you can’t find a hole, start looking at the eaves of the house and the corners of the roof. Often times a leak can manifest itself in the living-room when the crack or opening is actually at the far end of the house. Leaks have a way of travelling around.

Maintenance is key

Maintaining your floor surfaces, replacing broken tile or just redoing the whole floor will prolong their lives indefinitely. The same goes for your roof. Some repairs can be done by a homeowner but it’s best to have an expert just give you some ideas. Your local building supply store, hardware store or roofing company will be more than happy to give you some free advice about your roofing and flooring needs so you can keep them both just perfect!
